The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) recently announced a two-part free webinar series titled, “A Great Symphony of Prayer” as a means for the faithful to participate in the Year of Prayer which was announced by Pope Francis on January 21, 2024.

The Jubilee Office in Rome has prepared a series of booklets on prayer, the themes of which will be taken up during the webinar series.

The Sisters of Charity Halifax will celebrate 175 years of service this May.

On May 11, 1849 four sisters from the New York Sisters of Charity arrived in Halifax and began their ministry at Saint Mary’s School and Convent on Barrington Street.  As they served the people of Halifax at the time, young women expressed interest in ministry wanted to join the religious community.

For those preparing for baptism this Easter, Lent is the final period of preparation. After the Rite of Election, those who were catechumens are now known as the Elect, and part of our duty as the local Catholic community is to pray for them! Whether you have Elect within your parish or not, we invite all of you to include these people in your prayers this week as they look forward to being formally welcomed into the Church. On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays in Lent they will celebrate “the scrutinies”, which are rituals that date back to the early days of the Church and are linked to the Gospel read for Mass, and take place after the Homily.

On December 8, 2023 during the celebrations for our Archdiocesan Feast Day, Archbishop Dunn announced that we would host a Eucharistic Congress in our diocese.  The planning for the event has begun in earnest and more information will be available shortly.  In the meantime we invite the people and parishes of the Archdiocese to save the date for the Eucharistic Congress: October 18-20, 2024.

What is a Eucharistic Congress? A Eucharistic Congress is time where a large number of Catholics gather to worship Our Lord in the Eucharist

On Sunday, January 21, 2024 after the angelus the Holy Father announced a Year of Prayer:

“The coming months will lead us to the opening of the Holy Door, with which we will begin the Jubilee. I ask you to intensify your prayer to prepare us to live well this event of grace, and to experience the strength of God’s hope. Therefore, today we begin the Year of Prayer; that is, a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer in personal life, in the life of the Church, and in the world. We will also be helped by the resources that the Dicastery for Evangelization will make available.”
