Our Seminarians are Home for the Summer

Our four seminarians, discerning the priesthood for the Archdioceses of Halifax- Yarmouth, have returned home from their seminary studies.  Bruce, Greg, Morgan, and Nathan will serve in a variety of ways in the diocese over their summer break. How was life in the seminary this year?  We asked them! Below we share Bruce and Morgan’s experiences.

After a wonderful summer helping at St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish in Halifax, I returned to St. Peter’s in September and now find myself with another academic year behind me.   As the year quickly comes to a close, I am filled with much gratefulness for the gifts that God has given me this past year.  Aside from enjoying the lifelong friendships and the brotherhood fostered within the walls of this beautiful building, I successfully navigated my way through many classes this year: two morals courses, classes on the four Gospels, as well as John’s three Epistles and Revelation, in addition to classes on the early Church Fathers, Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), as well as classes on ecumenism and marriage.  I also experienced the most challenging course thus far in my formation: the Trinity.  I also profited from beautiful liturgies, parish experience, volunteering with Alpha and RCIA, fruitful spiritual direction, and days of silent reflection.  The pinnacle of my year, however, did not take place in London, but rather in my beloved archdiocese last October with the Eucharistic Congress. What a beautiful, spiritual, and emotional event, resulting in lasting memories and friendships.  Hats off to Archbishop Dunn and all the organizers!  Finally, as I write this, I am beginning to prepare for exams, Holy Week, our year-end week-long spiritual retreat, followed by a twelve-week CPE (spiritual care) course here in London.  Following this I will travel back home for a bit of rest before diving into my pastoral year at Divine Mercy Parish in Dartmouth, for which I am very excited!  In the meantime, I ask for your continued prayers, which have been (and continue to be) such a blessing for me. God bless!

Home Parish: Immaculate Conception, Truro
Studying at St. Peter’s Seminary, London, ON

This past year at St. Peter’s Seminary was my first year of theology, and it was a great joy from start to finish. In my classes I was able to learn more about human nature and the role that grace plays in elevating us when we cooperate with it; about the nature of revelation and doctrine; about Jesus Christ and the way the Church’s understanding and articulation of His person developed; about the Church’s history; about the Scriptures; and so much more. Not only was the class material fascinating, but it also offered excellent content for meditation and reflection in prayer. I loved the philosophy I was able to study last year, but the theology has surpassed my expectations and has been an even greater joy to study. As I mentioned, these classes, along with the retreats we have had, and with the help of my spiritual director, have helped me to be more intentional about my personal prayer, and I have been able to recognize the ways that the Lord is working within me and the desires He has placed within my heart. The community life and my time in the parishes together have also been consistent sources of joy. Throughout this year my sense that this is where God is calling me to be has deepened, and I am so grateful for this privilege and opportunity to be formed according to the heart of Jesus, so that I can be of greater service to Him and the people who form His Church.

  • * Prayer to Know One's Vocation

Lord, my God and my loving Father, you have made me to know you,
to love you, to serve you, and thereby to find and to fulfill myself.
I know that you are in all things, and that every path can lead me to you.
But of them all, there is one especially by which you want me to come to you.
Since I will do what you want of me, I pray you, send your Holy Spirit to me:
into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart,
to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all my love,
with all my mind, and with all my strength right to the end.

    Amen

Almighty and Eternal God, You have poured out on your priests the blessing of the Holy Spirit
as they share in the priesthood of Christ your Son. We praise You for giving this gift to Your Church.

Through Your priests, Your people are sanctified and invited into the mysteries of Christ. We thank You for their generous service. Grant to your priests the gift of joy in ministry and life.
Renew them each day in their consecrationfor the salvation of the world.

Lord, hear our prayers for those You are calling into Your service now.
Bless them with an openness to Your will and a love for Your holy people.

May all your priests be renewed in holiness through the example of your servant St. John Vianney.
Filled with the fire of your love, may they do all for your greater glory.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

    Amen.

"A place where people gather to freely discern their vocation to holiness and mission."

Holy Cross Chaplaincy exists to live lifelong community, giving students an experience of relationship that lays deep roots for their whole life long. The Household Program is more than a place to live; it is a way of life meant to form young people into lifelong relationship and fulfilling vocation. It’s the heart of our community and the primary place we live out our “why.” Participants in the household program commit to three ideals:

    1. Deep relationship with God
    2. Healthy community life with each other and the outside community
    3. Vocational discernment

These three things, lived well, hopefully help to form program participants into activated parish leaders, fulfilled in their vocations.
