World Day of Migrants and Refugees: Sunday, October 5, 2025

This Sunday, October 5 is the 111th Word Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR). In this Jubilee Year it we recognize this day on same weekend that the Jubilee of Migrants will happen in Rome.

On this 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Leo XIV calls the Church to see migrants and refugees not only as people on the move, but as missionaries of hope. In a world shaken by war, injustice, and climate crisis, they witness daily to faith, courage, and the enduring promise of God. Like the people of Israel in the wilderness, they journey with trust, carrying with them a longing for peace, dignity, and a better future. Read the Pope’s message

Their presence is a gift to the Church, a reminder of our pilgrim identity and a call to renew our mission in the world. As we welcome them, may our communities be transformed by their witness and be stirred to live more fully the Gospel of love, justice, and hospitality.

Did you know that the Archdiocese supports Refugees?

For over 35 years,  the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth has been actively involved in sponsoring refugees—restoring dreams, renewing hope, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with those forced to flee their homelands. Through this ministry, we have helped reunite families separated by conflict and accompanied many along their journey to safety and new life.

If your parish feels called to be part of this life-giving mission, we invite you to consider refugee sponsorship. Together, we can continue to be a beacon of hope and a reflection of Christ’s love in action.

Prayer

God, Almighty Father,
we are your pilgrim Church
journeying towards the Kingdom of heaven.
We live in our homeland,
but as if we were foreigners.
Every foreign place is our home,
yet every native land is foreign to us.
Though we live on earth,
our true citizenship is in heaven.
Do not let us become possessive
of the portion of the world
you have given us as a temporary home.
Help us to keep walking,
together with our migrant brothers and sisters,
toward the eternal dwelling you have prepared for us.
Open our eyes and our hearts
so that every encounter with those in need
becomes an encounter with Jesus, your Son and our Lord.
Amen.
