World Day of Migrants and Refugees

The year 2025 marks the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR), a tradition the Church has upheld since 1914. Each year, the day is guided by a unique theme and a papal message, offering us a chance to reflect on the experiences of vulnerable people on the move. It is a time to pray for migrants and refugees, recognize the challenges they face, and reflect on the many opportunities migration brings for renewal, encounter, and growth.

While WDMR is traditionally observed on the last Sunday of September, this year it will be celebrated on October 4 and 5, in honour of the Jubilee of Migrants.

Theme and Message

As the title for his annual message, the Holy Father has chosen “Migrants, missionaries of hope”.  On this 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Leo XIV calls the Church to see migrants and refugees not only as people on the move, but as missionaries of hope. In a world shaken by war, injustice, and climate crisis, they witness daily to faith, courage, and the enduring promise of God. Like the people of Israel in the wilderness, they journey with trust, carrying with them a longing for peace, dignity, and a better future.

Their presence is a gift to the Church, a reminder of our pilgrim identity and a call to renew our mission in the world. As we welcome them, may our communities be transformed by their witness and be stirred to live more fully the Gospel of love, justice, and hospitality.
