As Christmas approaches our Emergency Shelter Project is continuing full speed. To date $196,970 has been raised thanks to the generosity of many people in the province and beyond. Last week a group of Christian churches in HRM heard about our project and donated $36,000 to the cause. It is clear that Nova Scotians care about those in need!
Seven shelters are up and approved for occupancy. Five of them have guests moved in or soon to be moved in for the winter! Currently shelters are found at:
- Three at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish (St. Anthony Church)
- Two at Stella Maris Parish (St. Michael Church)
- Two at St. Francis & St. Clare of Assisi Parish (two at St. Theresa Church)
We expect five more shelters to go up before Christmas Eve – with guests ready for many of them. We won’t get all 20 shelters up by Christmas Eve but we will be really close. By the end of the year we hope all 20 shelters will be up and ready to give some people in need a safe temporary space as our Nova Scotian winter hits full force. The upcoming locations of some of the shelters include:
- Two at Holy Trinity Parish (St. John Vianney Church)
- Two at Saint Benedict Parish
- One at Divine Mercy Parish (St. Clement Church)
- One at Christ the King Parish (St. Thomas More Church)
- Two more at St. Francis & St. Clare Parish (St. Patrick’s and Saint Mother Teresa Churches)
- Two at St. Ignatius Parish
As housing is an issue throughout our province three shelters locations will also be located outside of HRM
- One at All Saints Parish (Holy Family Church)
- Two at St. John the Apostle Parish (St. Joseph Church)
The generosity and care of people is very evident. Thank you to all who have helped make the Emergency Shelters Project such a success thus far. To find out more about the project or to donate go to: www.halifaxyarmouth.org/shelters
