Who’s Coming to the Congress?

The Archdiocese will host a Eucharistic Congress for the first time ever this fall from October 17-20, 2024.  What is a Eucharistic Congress about? A Eucharistic Congress is a specific time to gather as the faithful to reflect on our understanding and belief about the source and summit of our faith: the Eucharist. For many Catholics this is a time to re-discover why the Eucharist is so essential to our identity as Catholics. Christ gave himself up for us and gives himself to us through the Eucharist in order to transform the world.

To help us understand the Eucharistic, the Congress theme: Communion to heal the world, will be broken into five ways that the Eucharist can heal.  The Eucharist can RESTORE, UNITE, INSPIRE, SERVE, and EQUIP.  Five keynotes throughout the weekend will help attendees gain a deeper sense of how the Eucharist can heal our world. The keynotes will be given by:

Archbishop Paul-André Durocher

Archbishop Durochers is the Chief Shepherd of the Archdiocese of Gatineau in Quebec.  He is a great speaker and teacher and we are pleased to have him be a part of our Eucharistic Congress.

Ordained to the priesthood for the diocese of Timmins on July 2, 1982, he taught high school and served in various parishes. He eventually was named Episcopal vicar for pastoral and sacramental affairs and director of the chancery. He completed the civil Licentiate in Canon law with the University of Strasbourg, France, in 1992. During a sabbatical year in 1995–1996, he attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and completed his ecclesiastical Licentiate in theology.

Archbishop Richard Smith

Archbishop Smith is from Halifax and is familiar to many in our diocese. He served in various parishes in the archdiocese before he was appointed the Bishop of Pembroke in 2002. We are delighted to have him join us for our Eucharistic Congress.

Currently Archbishop Smith currently serves in the Archdiocese of Edmonton. He serves as President of the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, and is past president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2011-2013.

He has also been a member and chairman of the Episcopal Commission for Christian Education, and spiritual adviser to the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Archbishop Smith is currently a member of the Board of the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute.

Most recently, Archbishop Smith served as General Co-ordinator of Pope Francis’ historic visit to Canada, July 24 – 29, 2022. This was the fourth papal visit to Canada and the first since Saint John Paul II’s journey in 2002.
