As we start a new year, a great big thank you goes out to all who have contributed to the Emergency Shelters Project. As a result of your great generosity we have just surpassed our fundraising goal. In total $336,945.50 has been raised. This means 20 shelters are fully paid for! The funds will allow us to provide for additional costs associated with the builds, support our twenty guests, and continue to find ways to counter the homelessness crisis.
During the last week of December three shelters went up: two at Saint Francis and Saint Clarie of Assisi Parish, in Halifax at Saint Mother Theresa and Saint Patrick Churches; and one at Holy Family Parish in Cumberland County at All Saints Church in Amherst. By the end of 2021, 15 emergency shelters were installed with the remaining five shelters being built will be up within the first two weeks of 2022. Making this initiative real means that twenty people will start the new year off with a safe and warm shelter to call home temporarily as our cold Nova Scotia winter goes into full effect.
We also wish to thank Neil Wolthers and his team at Well Engineered Inc. for partnering with the Archdiocese on this project and making the production and installation of these emergency shelters a reality.
Let us continue to pray for our emergency shelter guests, the parishes that are hosting them, and the many groups and individuals who are helping to “make room at the inn” for all God’s people!
