The purpose of the Christian life is to know God as revealed in Jesus Christ, have faith in Him, and imitate Him in all that we do. (Mt. 22:37) This includes loving others by keeping the commandments such as “You shall not murder”. (Ex. 20:13, Mt. 19:18)
Jesus illustrates what that means in practical terms with the parable of the Good Samaritan. (Lk. 10:25-37) The Christian response to suffering is accompaniment and care – never killing. Jesus identifies with those at the margins, saying: “Whatever you do for the least of these you do it to me.” (Mt. 25:40)
