World Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugee: September 29, 2024

Sunday, September 29 marks the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Each year the Church offers brings attention to this day with a theme and papal message. The Church has been celebrating this day since 1914 on the last Sunday in September.  It’s always an occasion to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers.

Theme and Message

The theme of Pope Francis’ message for the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees is: God walks with His people. In this message, the Holy Father reminds us that all of us, God’s people, are migrants on this earth, on our way to the “true homeland”, the Kingdom of Heaven.

Migrants are a contemporary icon of this people on a journey, of the Church on a journey, and at the same time, it is in them and in all our vulnerable brothers and sisters that we can encounter the Lord who walks with us.

The Archdiocese supporting Refugees

The Archdiocese has been sponsoring refugees for decades. Through this we have restored dreams, brought hope, and shared the love of Jesus. We have reunited families who have been separated during conflict and in the cause of migrants’ journey. The renewed hope is appreciated as reflected in this statement from a newly reunited family in August 2024, ‘Our family have welcomed Sylvia yesterday, Aug 30 and we are happy beyond words. We would like to take this moment to thank Roman Catholic Church for this opportunity’. (the name has been changed to keep the identify confidential)

Prayer

God, Almighty Father,
we are your pilgrim Church
journeying towards the Kingdom of heaven.
We live in our homeland,
but as if we were foreigners.
Every foreign place is our home,
yet every native land is foreign to us.
Though we live on earth,
our true citizenship is in heaven.
Do not let us become possessive
of the portion of the world
you have given us as a temporary home.
Help us to keep walking,
together with our migrant brothers and sisters,
toward the eternal dwelling you have prepared for us.
Open our eyes and our hearts
so that every encounter with those in need
becomes an encounter with Jesus, your Son and our Lord.
Amen.
