The Human Resources office assists the Archdiocese in developing and maintaining a wholesome and healthy workplace for all who work together to further the mission of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. The Human Resources office is responsible for developing and updating policies and procedures affecting lay employees of the Archdiocese, both in parishes and at the Pastoral and Administration offices. Human Resources assists in the recruitment and selection of personnel at the Pastoral and Administrative offices and advises pastors and other administrative staff on recruitment, selection, employee relations, performance management, training and development and organizational development matters at the parish level. Human Resources also provides pay and benefits for the Pastoral and Administrative staff as well as a number of parishes, cleric, deacons, and staff of the archdiocese.

The 200 page document issues guidelines that aim to ensure that every Roman Catholic diocese across Canada develops strict protocols to safeguard minors and assist victims that come forward.

Christ the King Parish is looking to hire an individual to manage and lead the 2024 seasonal Holy Cones Ice Cream Shop located at 320 Flying Cloud Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Holy Cones operates seven days per week from 12:00(noon) pm to 9:00 pm, weather dependent, from late-May until Labour Day weekend in September.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising staff members;
  • Daily opening, closing and securing of the ice cream shop; management of funds; and preparation of weekly schedule and timesheets of workers;
  • Ensure inventory management system is kept up to date, order supplies and monitor ice cream handling procedures;
  • Ensure effective customer service;
  • Other duties as required to ensure the success of the operation.

Required qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational program with a commitment to return to studies for the Fall semester.
  • Availability from mid-May to early September.

We are seeking a full-time Development Coordinator to join our team at the Archdiocese of Halifax – Yarmouth.

The Development Coordinator will report to the Financial Administrator and work closely with the Archdiocesan Business Office and Pastoral Life and New Evangelization Team (PL&NE), clergy, and parish staff to support parishes in the development of their planned giving programs and to provide Diocesan support to various missions and campaigns. The Development Coordinator will seek various funding opportunities and pursue those opportunities including the writing of Grants and proposals. Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining a professional and kind presence will ensure success.

The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in fundraising, preferably in non-for-profit environment. Previous event coordination and project management experience are preferred. Driver’s license is a requirement for this role.

Summary:

Student Project Assistant is a summer employment opportunity that is funded through Nova Scotia Student Summer Incentive Program (SKILL), a program which provides employment opportunities for students. Applicants must be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia or live in Nova Scotia for at least six months prior to the work term.

The successful candidate must be entering full time post-secondary studies in the fall semester immediately following the work term or continuing full-time post-secondary studies following the work term. This will be a full-time term position, running from May to the end of August. Applicants must be available for the entirety of the work term. The Archdiocese is putting an increasing focus on building and property management, and this summer position will assist in a variety of activities to achieve this purpose.

The student will:

  1. Assist in the creation of a property database; they will analyze and use the information currently available about properties
  2. Identify the properties
  3. Gather and collect information about the properties
  4. Assist in updating the property database
  5. Correct information on land registry sites
  6. Assist in creating procedures that will enable this department to maintain the database's updates in the future.

Job Description:

Accountability: The Cathedral Tour Guide directly reports to the Reverend, Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica 

Summary:

Through a government student grant program, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is looking to hire a Cathedral Assistant & Guide with us for a placement starting July until the end of August. The Cathedral Assistant & Guide will lead several guided tours daily, pointing out architectural features, historic and artistic features, elements which reflect tenets of faith, and the ways that Saint. Mary's Cathedral Basilica has played a role in the development of Halifax and of Canada.

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (summer through the end of August) and have been a full-time student in the past semester and planning to return to full time studies in the fall.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  • Student will spend a significant portion of the day staffing the Cathedral Information Booth, which is located at the entrance to the building. They will be available here for tourists who visit the historic site. When not engaged with the visitors, they will ensure the booth is fully stocked with pamphlets.
  • Student will be the primary contact with workers and other professionals who come to work on the building during the restoration process. Safety equipment and training will be provided if ever necessary
  • Student will learn how to assist with the building's various public services and ceremonies during the week. They will be taught how to prepare, conduct and clean up for each event. They will be supported and supervised by staff to ensure quality community access.
  • Student will be provided with the necessary tools to coordinate and offer a guided building tour. They will learn the building's history and approved tour script but be confident enough to communicate the information to the visitors.
  • Student is responsible for opening and locking the Cathedral. They will be guided on how to properly and safely open and close/secure the Cathedral building daily for public access

Qualifications:

  • Background in the theory and practice of tourism and hospitality
  • Comfortable speaking about their relationship with Christ

Summary:

The Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth seeks to hire a student to be the lead project coordinator for its annual summer youth conference, Steubenville Atlantic. This conference takes place on the campus of Saint Mary’s University and is aimed at youth in high school looking to learn more about their Roman Catholic faith. Steubenville Atlantic brings together young people from across the Atlantic provinces and has been running since 2007.

The student must be comfortable working in a faith environment and must have a robust understanding of and respect for the practice and teachings of the Catholic Church. The student need not be a practicing Catholic.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, organizing and implementing all aspect of the evet in collaboration with the event team (volunteers) and the team in the Office of Pastoral Life and New Evangelization.
  • Leading the event team, maintaining the event budget, coordinating with conference venue and suppliers, promoting the event to youth throughout Atlantic Canada, and overall problem solving. Strong communications skills, oral, written, and via social asset to this role.
  • Occasionally providing support to other programs and initiatives overseen by the Office of Pastoral Life and New Evangelization.

Accountability: The Groundworker reports directly to the Cemetery Grounds Operation Supervisor

Summary:

Through a government student grant program, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth is looking to hire two (2) Groundworkers for our Catholic cemeteries with us for a 8 weeks placement starting July until the end of August. The Cemetery Groundworker is responsible for the maintenance for the three Catholic cemeteries in the Halifax Regional Municipality according to operational standards, specifications, policies and provincial legislation.

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

Work Location:

Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mount Olivet Cemetery, and Holy Cross Cemetery

Duties and Responsibilities:

(Main functions but not limited to the following)

The maintenance and operations activities of the three catholic cemeteries including but not limited to:

  • Landscaping, maintenance of cemetery grounds including clean up of grounds, mowing and trimming of lawns, trees and shrubs.
  • Report any ground holes, depressions and fallen headstones to the Cemetery Grounds Operation Supervisor
  • Responsible for maintaining a work environment that is above all standards for occupational health and workplace safety.

Position Relationships:

The Groundworker will work as a member of a team of maintenance employees. The Groundworker may at times work side by side with contractors, and/or service providers.

Physical, Mental and Visual Demands:

  • Bending; frequent kneeling, squatting; stooping; twisting, crouching
  • Extensive walking and standing; frequent walking on rough surfaces
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Majority of work is performed outside in a variety of weather conditions
  • Stress related to the type of work environment

Qualifications:

  • Education: minimum Grade 10

Summary:

In keeping with the government grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the work assignment. The successful candidate must be able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

This position is ideally suited for a student with an interest in Library and Information Sciences, Religious Studies, History, Sociology, creative writing, or other Humanities. The student will be working in a faith-based environment and must possess a well-rounded knowledge of and respect for the teachings and structure of the Roman Catholic Church. The candidate need not be a practicing Roman Catholic.

Duties and Responsibilities:

(Main functions but not limited to the following)

The student will research and create a brief biography of at least one of our former Archbishops to be uploaded to our website. This will include scans of documents and/or photographs from our collection related to his life and tenure as Archbishop of Halifax. Our first 5 Archbishops have already been profiled, so this project will continue that trajectory, creating a biography of the Most Rev. Cornelius O’Brien. Archbishop O’Brien was the first Canadian born Bishop of Halifax, and was instrumental in the establishment and support of many institutions that were foundational to the growth of Halifax and beyond with a particular interest in education. As such, a biography of this Bishop will be of interest to readers in the wider community.

If time permits, the student will also create biographical sketch of the Most Rev. Edward J. McCarthy, who was the Archbishop of Halifax during World War I. That alone makes his episcopacy one of interest to researchers.

In consultation with the Archivist and the Chancellor, the student will be encouraged to explore our holdings in order to created other content for the Archives webpage, drawing from items and material in our collection.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Previous archival or library experience would be an asset
  • Working knowledge of the principles of archival practices, sound knowledge of archival/record-keeping concepts, principles and theory, and skills in the application of archival/recordkeeping.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Competency in word-processing, computer and data base function
  • Demonstrated research, analytical, organizational and planning skills and the ability to prioritize and work well in a high-pressure, multi-task environment and as part of a team, with the ability to shift between and among different initiatives
