What is an Episcopal Vicar?

In 2011, after consultation with the priests of the then Archdiocese of Halifax, Archbishop Mancini appointed four Episcopal Vicars to co-operate with him in sharing his episcopal ministry. Since then we have grown into the new Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. This new territorial configuration requires even more help in overseeing a geographically large and culturally diverse population.

An Episcopal Vicar's essential role is to oversee the life of the church in a specific region of the Archdiocese by representing the Archbishop in the area. The Episcopal Vicar exercises his shared ministry of leadership through dialogue and collaboration with the priests and people of his region. In some cases, the regional Episcopal Vicar is also entrusted with a particular portfolio, e.g. adult faith formation, catechesis, marriage & family, etc., because of his competency and interest in that area of pastoral life.
