For close to 10 years, several national offices of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) have been highlighting Red Wednesday, annually the third Wednesday of November, to draw attention to the fate of millions of persecuted, oppressed and threatened Christian worldwide. Last week,  ACN kicked off what is known as Red Week (#RedWeek, #SemaineRouge) in Canada. The primary objective is to “shed light on the persecution of Christians around the world,” says Marie-Claude Lalonde, national director of ACN Canada, “as well as the growing loss of religious freedom, which is a fundamental right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Next month Deacon Art Mitchell will be awarded the Peter G. Bernard, Q.C. Volunteer Award  from the International Sailors’ Society of Canada. The national award recognizes  Deacon Art’s  invaluable volunteer service to the mission to Seafarers Halifax. Based on nominations from seafarer centers across Canada, the award honours and recognizes volunteers who generously give of their time for the benefit of seafarers.

Last Thursday, Most Rev. William T. McGrattan, Bishop of Calgary and president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) released a statement commenting on the increased conflict in Israel and he encourages Canadian Catholics to pray for peace.  The full statement reads:
