Turkey and Syria Earthquake Relief

Archbishop Dunn joins his fellow Canadian Bishops in asking the faithful to donate to the relief efforts being made in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.  A media release put out by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on Friday, February 10 says:

With the support of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Aid to Church in Need (ACN), Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) Canada, and Development and Peace-Caritas Canada (DPCC) are launching an emergency aid campaign in response to the destructive earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday. They have pledged the total sum of nearly one million Canadian dollars.

The best way to give is through organizations that have partners in the affected areas.  Below are links to three of the organizations named above who have begun to collect donations online. We encourage you to give as you are able.

Let us pray for all who have lost their lives as a result of the earthquake. May God strengthen and comfort all who have been impacted by this devastating event and may the Holy Spirit guide those who are providing aid and relief.

On January 12, 2023, Archbishop Brian J. Dunn was one of fourteen individuals who were presented with the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of significant service to the province of Nova Scotia by the Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

On December 31, 2022, the president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Bishop Poisson issued a message on the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict.  In part it reads:

The war in Ukraine continues to rage on with no end in sight. Thousands of innocent people have lost their lives and millions more on the move as refuges in search of safety, food, shelter, clothing and medicine. It will be winter soon and hundreds of people will not be able to heat their homes.

Archdiocesan Funeral Guidelines

Archbishop Mancini in collaboration with the clergy, religious and lay faithful of our Church of IMG 2500 webHalifax-Yarmouth prepared the document on Catholic funerals in the Archdiocese of Halifax Yarmouth. The document is titled "Catholic Funerals: Theological and Pastoral Considerations".

The document touches on the frequent experience in our faith communities that funerals draw people with diverse connections to the Catholic faith or faith in general. Liturgical options, specifically the separation of the Funeral Rite (Order of Christian Funerals) and the celebration of the Eucharist, can facilitate a fuller involvement of mourners at Catholic funerals. As well new opportunities are presented to evangelize and catechized a Christian understanding of life, death and resurrection. For the faithful the opportunity to celebrate Eucharist at a memorial Mass within a short time of the funeral liturgy can be much more meaningful experience of communion.

This guidelines addresses issues like eulogies, use of Christian symbols at funerals, cremation, and the celebration of the funeral rite at funeral parlors as well as other points to assist parish personnel in the ministry to those who are grieving.
